The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) detected numerous fires (red dots) burning near the Volga River in western Russia on April 20 and 22, 2002. The Volga River flows southward from its origins in the Ural Mountains to empty into the Caspian Sea.
