Franz Josef Land is an archipelago consisting of about 60 islands, which are mostly snow and ice covered. Uninhabited, the islands are the northernmost land mass in the Eastern Hemisphere, and lie almost entirely within the Arctic Circle, north of the Barents Sea. In this MODIS image from April 30, 2002, the islands are locked in permanent winter, and the sea is a loosely packed mosaic of ice.
