Separated by the Strait of Bonifacio, the islands of Corsica (top) and Sardinia (bottom) sit in the Mediterranean Sea between Italy to the north and northern Africa to the south. A vast portion of Corsica is protected as the Regional Natural Park of Corsica, and the impact on vegetation is clearly visible in the image, with large stretches of lush vegetation apparent. The park boundaries are most clearly visible on the east coast, where dense vegetation gives way to the patchwork, mottled green that suggest human development. Sardinia has low-lying terrain in the central portion of the country, which was once submerged under seaonly the mountains of the east and west coasts were above water.
