A few scattered fires were burning in Queensland, Australia, on the Cape York Peninsula on May 16, 2002. This image, which shows the bright coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef along the Peninsula's eastern coast, was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Also visible in the image are the silvery-looking wetlands in the curve where the western coast of the Peninsula meets the mainland. That body of water is the Gulf of Carpentaria.
