Wildfires in Central Alaska

Good weather in early June helped firefighters keep several wildfires in Central Alaska from burning totally out of control. However, these Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from May 16, 2002, shows that the fires (red dots) are still active and producing large smoke plumes (image center). In the false-color image, vegetation is bright green and burn scars from the fires are reddish-brown.
