Rodeo and Chediski Fires, Arizona

The thick smoke being created by the Rodeo and Chediski Fires (red dots) in east central Arizona gives evidence of the enormity of the fire, which combined over the weekend of June 22 to produce a fire of more than 300,000 acres. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite on June 22, 2002. In the false-color image, vegetation is bright green and burned areas are reddish brown. In both images, bright red dots mark the location of active fires.
