Fire season is clearly underway in the West. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from June 30, 2002, focuses on Wyoming (center). In the southern portion of the state, the Reese Mountain Fire is threatening homes and businesses. In the northern part of the state, firefighters. efforts to construct containment lines around the Daly Draw Fire (northeastern-most red dot) were thwarted when 70 mile-per-hour winds forced the fire across all containment lines. To the east in South Dakota, the Grizzly Gulch Fire has destroyed at least two residences. In the false-color images, vegetation is green, burned areas are reddish brown, and active fire detections are bright red.
