In western Brazil (top) and northern Bolivia (bottom center), development can be seen in Amazon rainforest. Areas of deep, solid green are punctuated in places by lighter green that shows where deforestation has transformed the vegetation, especially in the lower right quadrant of the image. Two large Amazon river tributaries are seen running southwest-northeast in the image. The northernmost, more tightly meandering river is the Purus, and the larger one to the south is the Madeira. Both empty into the Amazon just to the north of where this scene ends. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on June 25, 2002.
