Fires in Oregon and California

On August 7, 2002, scattered fires were detected across California by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite. In the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the southeast of the green vegetation in the San Joaquin Valley, the Mc Nalley Fire is burning in the Sequoia National Forest. At bottom right, smoke from the Pines Fire near San Diego wafts over the Salton Sea.

Clear skies over the West Coast also revealed forest fires (red dots) still raging in southwestern and south-central Oregon. A smoke plume from the Florence and Sour Biscuit Fires drifts southward over the Pacific Ocean.
