Snow dusts theChilean and Argentinean Andes in this true-color Terra MODIS imageacquired November 23, 2002. The Andes Mountains, which run the entirelength of the continent, are the South American version of the EuropeanAlps. At over 5000 miles long, they are also one of the longest mountainranges in the world and are home to peaks over 22,000 feet, topped only bythe Himalayas. The Andes connect to the Sierra Madres and Rocky Mountainsin the north (via the mountains of Panama and Central America), andcontinue into Antarctica in the South.
To the west in the image is a large bank of clouds covering the southernPacific Ocean and parts of the Chilean coast. The MODIS instrumentdetected five fires, all of which are marked in red; two in Chile(bottom), and three in Argentina (right middle edge). The Chileancapital, Santiago, is visible as a gray smudge just southeast of thesouthernmost Chilean fire.
