Southern Africa

In southern Africa, tropical savanna fades into more arid terrain. Countries shown on December 2, 2002, are (clockwise from top left) Democratic republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Republic of South Africa, Botswana, the eastern tip of Namibia, and Zimbabwe in the center of the image. The lake in the center is Lake Kariba, a huge catchment of the Zambezi River, backed up behind the Kariba Dam. On November 14, the image is centered farther west, and Angola can be seen at left edge. These images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite. A few fires were detected and are marked in red.
