Fires in Southwest Russia

In southwestern Russia, a number of fires were burning in the shadow of the Caucasus Mountains, which separate Russia from Georgia (left) and Azerbaijan (right). The fires were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on November 21, 2002, and are marked with red dots on this true-color image. At left is the Black Sea and at right is the Caspian Sea. At lower left is Turkey.
