In this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite, the reds and green of Texas at bottom center, and Oklahoma and Kansas to the north fade into the paler, dun-colored terrain of Nebraska and South Dakota. Where the Missouri River crosses from North Dakota into South Dakota, it appears that cold temperatures may be already freezing the river, even though winter is a weeks away. Along the western edge of the image, the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains in Arizona (bottom) and Colorado (center) are dusted with snow.
