The Alaskan Aleutian islands run diagonally from top right to bottom left in this true-color Terra MODIS image from December 13, 2002. These islands are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of volcanic activity caused by the shifting and moving of the Earth’s crust. At upper right is the southwestern corner of mainland Alaska. The Bering Sea dominates the upper left half of the image, and the Northern Pacific Ocean dominates the bottom right half.
