On the western and eastern margins of Mexico two branches of the Sierra Madre Mountains trap most of the rainfall in Mexico, leaving the interior high plains, called the altiplano, very dry. In this true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) from January 16, 2003, scattered fires were burning across the region, and are marked with red dots.
