In northern India, the lands along the Ganges River are taking on spring’s green appearance, while the northern slopes of the Himalaya Mountains in India and Nepal (center) are still blanketed with snow. In the bottom right quadrant of the image, a shroud of smog hangs over India and Bangladesh (far bottom right). Amid the fertile landscape, gray patches indicate towns and cities, the largest of which is New Delhi and its surrounding towns, located northwest of image center along one of the rivers running down out of the mountains. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite on February 14, 2003.
