Fires, Saharan dust, and smoke in West Africa

A combination of dust from the Sahara Desert and smoke from scores of fires (red dots) is choking the air over West Africa in this true-color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite on January 30, 2003.
