This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on February 28, 2003, is dominated by Brazil (right), but also shows part of Bolivia (left center) and Argentina (bottom left). Amid the patchy clouds, dozens of fires have been detected by MODIS and are marked with red dots. Deforestation is apparent throughout the region, where tan or light green rectangles interrupt the continuous deep green of forests. In the center of the image is a huge system of wetlands known as the Pantanal.
