Cloud vortices off Jan Mayen Island, Greenland Sea

A few hundreds miles off the east coast of Greenland, Norway´s Jan Mayen Island (bottom left) makes a bright white speck amid swirls of clouds over the Greenland Sea in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Terra satellite on June 28, 2003. At upper left, sea ice is visible beneath a veil of clouds and northeast of Jan Mayen Island, vortices spin the clouds into classic whirlpool shapes.
