A cloud of haze hangs over the Amazon rainforest in Brazil (right) and Peru (left) from dozens of fires burning in the region. Most of the fires, marked with red dots in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, seem to be burning along rivers in areas that have been cleared, seen as light green and tan against the dark green of the forest. Peru´s Ucayali River runs vertically just left of the border. Somewhat obscured by smoke, the Amazon River cuts horizontally across the top of the image. Brazil´s Juruá River runs into the center of the image from the right.
This image was captured by NASA´s Terra satellite on September 1, 2003.
