Fires across Australian East Coast

Dozens of fires were detected across eastern Australia on September 15, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. In this image, active fire detections have been marked in red. Most of the fires are burning in the Great Dividing Range Mountains, which stretch along the eastern margin of Australia, but a few can be seen burning southwest of the city of Brisbane, which makes a cement-colored patch at upper right.
