Fires in California

Lightning-caused fires burn in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image taken September 23, 2003 by the Aqua satellite. Red dots mark additional fires burning throughout the state, including one near Cape Mendocino in California's “Redwood Empire.”
