Red dots mark the locations of hundreds of fires burning across Central Africa. Fire is a part of agricultural practices in the region, and most of these fires are likely related to farming and grazing. A thin haze, possibly smoke from the fires, hangs over much of the region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this image on December 4, 2003. Sudan covers the top right corner of the image, and immediately below it on the right is Uganda. Below Sudan and to the left is the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and above it is the Central African Republic. Chad fills the upper left corner, and Cameroon runs down the left edge. Congo is nestled between Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
