Fires in western Africa

Small fires are scattered across Western Africa, shown here in these true-color Terra and Aqua MODIS images from December 29, 2003. The fires are most likely agricultural in origin. The two images show how the fires increase as the day goes on; in the morning, Terra image, there are fewer observed fires than in the afternoon, Aqua image. Smoke from the fires also accumulates as the day goes on, casting a hazy grayish-blue veil over the scene.
