Fires in Indochina

Scattered fires burn throughout the region of Southeast Asia known as Indochina. The fires, which are marked with red dots, are concentrated mostly in Cambodia, though they are also in Vietnam (bottom and upper right), Thailand (left), and Laos (upper right, west of Vietnam). The fires in eastern Cambodia are giving off visible smoke plumes. In northeastern Cambodia, the Tonle Sap’s waters swirl with clouds of brown and green. Just visible on the lower left edge of the image, Bangkok is a gray sprawl on the shores of Thailand. This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image was acquired on January 7, 2004 by the Terra satellite.
