Lake Superior stands out like a giant sapphire against the gray and white landscapes of Canada and the northern United States. When this image was captured on December 25, 2003, lake ice had not yet begun to accumulate in any significant amounts, as it would do later in the winter. By late February, most of the Great Lakes are almost completely covered in a thick layer of ice.
