The Bodele Depression is one of the largest sources of airborne dust in the world. Here a bright swath of dust stretches over the upper right part of these Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from the Terra satellite in the morning and the Aqua satellite in the afternoon on February 18, 2004. At bottom left, the wetlands surrounding what remains of Lake Chad are speckled with encroaching sand dunes.
