The Channel Islands are pushing through the low bank of clouds hanging over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California, top, and Northern Mexico. Though the ocean is cloud-covered, the land is clear, providing a view of both Los Angeles and San Diego. Los Angeles is the sprawling cement-colored area nearest the Channel Islands. The smaller grey area immediately north of the border is San Diego. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) captured this series of images between March 16 and March 18, 2004.
