The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite detected several fires, marked with red dots, burning across the Central United States on April 2, 2004. Most of the fires are probably related to agriculture, though the smokier fire in Arkansas may be a prescribed burn on state or federal lands set in the spring to decrease built-up underbrush and other vegetation that could contribute to more severe wildfires later in the season.
From the top right corner going clockwise, the states shown here are Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
