Thick tan dust hung over the Persian Gulf on April 17 and April 18, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) captured these images. The dust has probably blown out of Iraq, where northwest winds often whip through the Tigris and Euphrates River valleys, blowing desert dust out over the Gulf. On April 18, MODIS also detected a few scattered fires in Iran, right, and Kuwait, left. The fires have been marked with red boxes.
