The Great Bahama Bank forms a large, bright blue semi-circle around the Bahamas Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The bank is a shelf covered by shallow water that is at most, 25 meters (82 feet) deep. The shelf is covered with coral reefs, which give the water the bright blue color observed in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, acquired by the Terra satellite on April 8, 2004. MODIS detected several active fires, marked with red dots, on Cuba. Two fires also burn on Andros Island, the largest of the Bahama Islands shown here, and Abaco Island to the north.
