Dozens of fires, marked with red dots, were scattered across Mato Grosso, Brazil on May 21, 2004. Most of the fires are probably land use fires because they are burning in the light green and tan squares of land that have been cleared. Just right of center, dark green rainforest surrounds the Xingu River. The untouched forest is the Xingu National Park and Indigenous Peoples Preserve. The Araguaia River runs along the right edge of the image. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this true-color image.
