Southwestern United States

The pink Painted Desert of the Colorado Plateau curves across the top center of this image of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Patches of green to the south of the desert are formed by trees are growing on higher, cooler mountains. In Arizona, top left, MODIS detected a forest fire (marked in red) sending smoke over the eastern border. Other fires have also been marked in red. On the right, the thin black line of the Rio Grande snakes south through New Mexico on its way into Mexico. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on June 11, 2004.
