Northeastern China

The eastern spur of Mongolia points toward the bright green Da Hinggan Ling mountains in this true-color image acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on September 21, 2004. Hullun Nur lake, just southeast of the Russian, Chinese, and Mongoilan borders in the upper left portion of the image, appears a murky tan-green from sediments in the water, while due south Buyr Nuur lake is a deep, clear green.

Just a year ago, fires raged across Mongolia south of Buyr Nuur, leaving burn scars that stretched for kilometers. In the space of just a year, the burn scars have completely faded away, and are invisible in this image.
