Thick haze hung low over eastern China on October 9, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. A few fires, marked with red dots, were burning, but they certainly can’t account for the haze, which is so thick that the land is not visible in places.
