Eastern United States

Skies were remarkably clear over the Eastern United States on October 6, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. The Mississippi River runs south through the center of the scene, emptying into the Gulf of Mexico through Louisiana. The northern states have already started to turn a winter brown, while the south remains green. In the east, image right, a streak of orange covers the forests of the Appalachian Mountains.
