Marbled swirls of orange and green stretch across the US Mid-Atlantic States as autumn descends from the north. The orange largely follows the long, distinct curves of the tree-covered Appalachian Mountains through the center of the image. To the right of the mountains, a mixture of green and orange colors the eastern plain. Summer’s green lingers in the south. The north half of this image includes one of the most densely populated sections of the United States, and several large cities are visible. A nearly unbroken string of cement-colored gray extends from Washington, D.C., just above the center of the image, to New York City, top right. Between these two large cities are Baltimore and Philadelphia, as well as a number of smaller cities. This Terra MODIS image was acquired on November 7, 2004.
