This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image captures the transition from the plains of Central Canada to the rugged mountains of Western Canada. In the lower left corner of the image, the Rocky Mountains form a grey-brown arch, and a few of the peaks are still capped with snow on July 24, 2004. A few clouds also hang over the mountains. To the east of the mountains, agricultural fields appear as tiny variegated green specks. Alberta’s two largest cities are also visible in this image as grey splotches in the center of green prairie and farmland. The province’s capital, Edmonton, is in the north, while Calgary is nestled against the mountains further south. A few smoky fires were burning in Saskatchewan, to the east of Alberta. The fires are marked with red dots. Along the bottom of the image, the northern sections of Washington, Idaho, and Montana are visible.
