Snow in Scotland

Heavy snow blanketed Scotland on December 19, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image. The snow highlights the craggy highlands, with shadows defining the valleys while brilliant white marks out the higher elevations. The diagonal line that seems to be cut across the island is actually a series of lakes connected by canals. The largest of the lakes, in the northeast, is Loch Ness. In the center is Loch Lochy, and in the southwest is Loch Linnhe.
