Uruguary and Argentina

The landscape of central Argentina, left, and Uruguay, upper right, is a variegated tan and green. The tiny squares of color are created by agricultural fields, with cities and towns forming intermittent grey spots. Natural, uncultivated land, such as the land surrounding the Parana River, top center, tends to be more consistent in color. The expanse of cultivated land points to the strength of the agricultural sector in Argentina—agricultural products are among the country’s top exports. In the upper right corner of the image, the Uruguay River flows down to meet the Parana River in the Rio de la Plata, the large bay in the lower right corner of the image. The large grey region on the south side of the Rio de la Plata is Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, is also visible. It is the small cement-colored spot on the northern shores of the Rio de la Plata.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) detected several fires when it flew over on NASA’s Terra satellite on December 31, 2004. The fires have been marked with red dots.
