Blown by strong winter winds, dust sweeps north out of Libya in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, acquired on January 27, 2005 by NASA’s Aqua satellite. The dust casts a thick tan veil over Crete and numerous smaller Greek Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The powerful winds were part of a larger weather system that brought extremely cold temperatures to Europe and snow to Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
