Smoke and Fires in Southeast Asia

Scores of smoky fires were burning across Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh on March 21, 2005, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image. The fires, which are marked in red, are most strongly clustered in India in the upper left corner of the image. Fire is a tool commonly used in agriculture to clear ground. The widespread nature of these fires suggests that they are probably agricultural fires. In the lower left corner of the image, the Bay of Bengal reflects sunlight back to the satellite, giving the ocean’s surface a silvery appearance.
