The rugged tan and green Falkland Islands sit 483 kilometers east of South America in the Atlantic Ocean at about 52 degrees south latitude. Covered with grasslands, but not trees, the islands are home to penguins, seals, and a wide variety of birds. A line of mountains wrinkles the north shores of both islands, interrupted by Falkland Sound between the two islands. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this clear, photo-like image of the Falkland Islands on April 28, 2005.
