Fires were scattered across the Northern Great Plains of Canada and the United States on May 3, 2005, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image. With the coming of spring, farmers in this largely agricultural region are using fire to prepare their fields to be planted. The fires have been marked with red dots. In the north, ice still covers the center of Lake Winnipeg and several smaller lakes along the top edge of the image.
The image also shows where the tan grasslands of the plains give way to the deep green of the boreal forests of Saskatchewan, left, and Manitoba, right. The U.S. states shown in the image include Montana and Wyoming (left), North and South Dakota (center), and Minnesota.
