Dust storm in Southern Iraq

Two jets of dust are sweeping from Iraq over the Persian Gulf in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image taken by the Aqua satellite on June 18, 2005. At their point of origin, the dust plumes are dark. This indicates that they may be coming from open agricultural land of some sort, since the dust is not the same color as the surrounding desert soil. To the left of the dark plume, a faint white plume of desert dust smudges the surface of the image.
