Dust was on the move in Kazakhstan on July 20, 2005. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the Terra satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, a beige swath of dust moves to the southwest. The white area near the lower left corner of the image is a salt pan. South of that is the Syrdar’ya River. Kazakhstan is an arid country with desert regions near its southern border, so dust storms are not uncommon. Near the top of the image, MODIS has detected a fire, which is marked with a red square.
