Fires, smoke, and burn scars in Alaska and Yukon Territory

Dozens of intense forest fires were burning through the forests of Alaska when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on August 10, 2005. The fires, marked with red squares, are sending thick plumes of tan and white smoke into the air. The Alaska Interagency Fire Service report from August 10 stated that 571 fires had burned an estimated 2.4 million acres in the 2005 fire season to date.
