Rich dark soil over extensive fertile plains makes Ukraine a prime agricultural region. In fact, agriculture is visible across the country in this photo-like Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image, acquired by the Aqua satellite on August 22, 2005. Fields form tiny squares of tan and green in the large images. The fields give the most cultivated regions a slightly speckled appearance. It is in these regions that MODIS has detected numerous fires, which have been marked with red boxes. The fires were probably started to clear fields after the harvest.
