Fires were burning across eastern Australia when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flew overhead on NASA’s Terra satellite on October 6, 2005. Some of the larger fires were sending up plumes of thick white-grey smoke. The fires, all of which have been marked with red dots, may have started for a variety of reasons. Some may have been deliberately set to manage land and others are probably natural or accidental. Many of the fires are burning in the dark green band of the Great Dividing Range, the long chain of mountains that extends along Australia’s east coast. The region shown here includes southern Queensland, top, and northern New South Wales, bottom. The Great Barrier Reef forms brilliant turquoise spots in the Coral Sea in the upper right corner of the image.
