A river of smoke flowed eastward from a cluster of fires burning in Russia’s Far East on October 10, 2005. The fires (marked in red) appear to stretch from the Amur region northward into the Khabarovsk Territory. The smoke plume wafts several hundred kilometers away, across Sakhalin Island and out over the Sea of Okhotsk. This image of the fires was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
